A California judge has certified a class action lawsuit filed by Tesla car owners who claim they were misled by the company about its autonomous driving system.
According to Reuters, District Judge Rita Lin from San Francisco ruled that there were enough common questions to justify the lawsuit.
The lawsuit is being filed by drivers who purchased the Full Self-Driving (FSD) package from Tesla between October 2016 and July 2024.
The suit claims that despite the company’s statements, Tesla does not have the proper sensors and cannot demonstrate fully autonomous driving over long distances.
The judge’s decision reinforces that consumers may have been misled by statements on Tesla‘s website, blog posts, newsletters, and even remarks by Elon Musk made in 2016.
The company had claimed that its cars were already equipped with hardware ready for 100% autonomous driving. However, in practice, the system does not function exactly in this way.
In fact, in several lawsuits involving accidents caused by its autopilot system, Tesla‘s lawyers have emphasized that the autonomous driving system requires an attentive driver ready to intervene if necessary.
